DEAD-FLY – ENVY

” Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?”. Proverbs 27:4.

Another terrible sin which spoils our image is “Envy”. People become envious of others who are more successful and are more popular. A Greek wrestler was envious of Theagenes, the prince of wrestlers. When Theagenes died, a statue was erected in a public place to honour him. The very sight of the statue provoked the wrestler. Every night, he went to the public place and wrestled with the statue. One night, while he was wrestling ferociously, the statue was broken and fell on him and crushed him to death. Envy rots the bones (Proverbs 14:30). In the Bible, we read that Cain was envious of his brother Abel because the Lord accepted Abel’s offering and rejected his own. Envy swelled in his heart and he killed his own brother cruelly, shedding his innocent blood. When Saul heard the women singing and praising David on his victorious return after killing Goliath, he grew envious of David and tried to kill him. Envy is one of the terrible sins that Paul lists in Galatians 5:19 and it prevents us from inheriting the kingdom of God. The Bible teaches us not to be jealous of anyone, rather be content with what we have.

” Dear Lord, let me remain free from envying others and be content with what I have. Let it not rot my bones. Take away the slightest tinge of envy that may reside in my heart. In Jesus Name I pray “.–Amen.
